EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE


Dr David Hyams - President

Dr David Hyams graduated at University of Pretoria 1986. After housemanship, he spent 2 years in the SADF where he did his Aviation medicine course. He spent a year as Medical Officer at Kalafong Hospital in Paediatrics, OBS and Gynae and ear, nose and throat departments and has been in private general practice for the last 19 yrs in the East of Pretoria. Dr Hyams has run a travel medicine clinic within the practice for the last seven years and has been an Executive Committee Member of SASTM for the last 6 years.


Dr Salim Parker - President Elect

Dr Salim Parker is a General Practitioner with an interest in Hajj travel. He has been accompanying pilgrims as a medical officer from 2000. Dr Parker gives Hajj travel talks at Hajj classes in Cape Town, and engages in extensive pre-travel consultations. He is also medical co-ordinator for Jive 10km Big Walk, which is the biggest 10km walk in Africa, with about 20 000 participants annually.


Prof Gboyega Ogunbanjo - Immediate Past President

Prof. Gboyega A Ogunbanjo is HOD & Chief Specialist / Professor: Department of Family Medicine & PHC, University of Limpopo (Medunsa Campus).He has over 130 publications in both local and international peer-reviewed medical journals.

He holds fellowships of the College of the Family Physicians of South Africa - FCFP(SA), Australian College of Rural & Remote Medicine - FACRRM, Australasian College of Tropical Medicine - FACTM, and South African Academy of Family Practice - FAFP(SA).

He is the associate editor of the SA Family Practice journal, International Journal of Medicine, UK and editor of the Transactions journal of the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa and African Journal of Primary Health Care and Family Medicine (PHCFM). He is on the editorial board of the Southern African Journal of Epidemiology and Infection (SAJEI), International Journal of Primary Health Care (IJPHC) UK, Nigerian Postgraduate Medical Journal (Medline listed) to mention a few. He is married to Priscilla and they have two sons.


Sr Shirley May Corbett

Sr Shirley Corbett is a Registered Professional nurse. After being employed in the labour ward at Morningside Mediclinic for 10 years she joined British Airways Travel Clinics in 1999. Having done the Travel Medicine course, and obtaining dispensing & Yellow Fever licences, she is currently a highly respected & experienced member of the Netcare Travel Clinics staff.


Mrs Lee Baker

Mrs Lee Baker qualified as a pharmacist in 1975.

She has worked as a Medicine Information Pharmacist and is Managing Director of Amayeza Information Centre, the only private medicine information centre in South Africa, and in this capacity consults to several bodies, including medical schemes, pharmaceutical companies and legal firms, as well as running vaccine and malaria advisory services.

Mrs Baker lectures Medunsa and Wits Pharmacy students, and has done vaccine and malaria training for Nurses, Pharmacists and Paediatricians on behalf of sanofiPasteur and GlaxoSmithKline.

She is a member of the subcommittee of the Malaria Advisory Group that advises the Department of Health on prophylaxis and treatment of malaria, including drawing up the current guidelines.

Mrs Baker is a member of the Leadership Council of the Pharmacist Professional Group International Society of Travel Medicine.


Dr Jeannine van Lochem - Treasurer

Dr Jeannine van Lochem qualified in 1999. She has been in General Practice for the past 8 years and is currently practicing in Equastria, Pretoria.

Dr van Lochem was awarded the Best Student Award for the Travel Medicine Course 2010


Dr Albie de Frey

Dr Albie de Frey is a founding member, past president and active member of the Executive since SASTM’s inception. He is an honorary lecturer in Travel Medicine at the University of Witwatersrand.

He is the founding member of Worldwide Travel Medical Consultants which provides comprehensive travel health risk management since 1995 to various multi-national companies and Director of The Travel Doctor, a travel health provider network.


Dr Garth Brink - Project Manager

Dr Garth Brink is a graduate of the University of Pretoria. He has been a family physician in private general practice in Durban from 1972 and also runs a Travel Medicine Clinic within the practice. He is a Past-President of SASTM and the current Project Manager. Current Chairman of the Destination Community Support Group Interest Group of the International Society of Travel Medicine.
