SAA’s changes to JFK route

02 Mon, Sep 2013

SAA is to introduce a seasonal schedule change on its flights between Johannesburg and New York, adding a refuelling stop in Dakar, Senegal. The announcement has irked passengers, who say the Dakar stop is a major disruption to the flight and may even prompt them to consider other options.

From October 27, flight SA203 from Johannesburg will make a one-hour stop in Dakar before continuing on to JFK, according to SAA’s announcement. Flight SA204 from New York will continue to operate nonstop to Johannesburg. The airline will resume its regular Johannesburg-New York non-stop schedule in April.

Travellers have complained on popular consumer websites that the Dakar stop is a major deterrent to choosing SAA on this route. They say that it is inconvenient as passengers are woken up and required to prepare for landing, which entails putting the seat in the upright position, stowing away luggage and handing over any blankets and pillows to the flight attendants.

A spokesperson for SAA said the change was instituted because of summer take-off conditions in Johannesburg, with its high-altitude, which often resulted in weight restrictions.  Manoj Papa, SAA general manager: Commercial (acting), added: “SAA recognises the popularity of its non-stop service. However, instituting this temporary change during the low season will result in minimal changes for our customers, with a schedule that ensures that all connection opportunities from New York to onward points will remain the same.”
